Learn More About Hair Transplantation

Sun Exposure After Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplant surgery involves the extraction of real, alive hair follicles from the back of the head ( donor area ), and implantation of these follicles to the area where the person suffers from hair loss ( recipient area ). Successfully implanted hair needs at least 9 months to grow back. During this time, hair needs extra care. There’s no guarantee that every person reacts the same to this kind of surgery. For example, it is not certain whether sun exposure after hair transplant surgery affects every people in the same way or not.

Before we get started telling you the details, we would like to say that you should simply avoid sun exposure. There are certain types of cells on the scalp that are responsible for skin pigmentation. When the skin is surgically removed and the hair is extracted, these cells generally die. It takes at least months for the scalp to replace these cells and restore the pigmentation work again.

Sun Exposure and Scarrings

The other important thing about sun exposure is that if a newly transplanted hair is still in a recovery state, sunlight will definitely leave scarrings on the surgical areas.

The main reason for scarrings after hair transplantation is generally about the sensation of the skin. After a hair transplantation surgery, the scalp becomes more sensitive to ultraviolet lights. This makes the healing of the surgical area recover slower than usual. A faster recovery means that your hair transplant has fit the tissue perfectly and has the least chance to fall out. Slower recovery generally means a possible hair transplant failure…

In order to take the best care of the transplanted hair, patients should wear a hat to cover the surgical area. This is the most preferred protection method after hair transplant surgery.

If you’re uncomfortable with hats, the best protection method is sunscreen. Apply sunscreen on your surgical area to protect it from ultraviolet lights spreading from the sun.
